My day at the Historical Society

My "work" on Delaware History consisted mostly on the fire at the William Street Church back in January, 1971. (See here to see what the fuss is about)
Us volunteers at the Delaware Historical Society had discovered several (large) manila envelopes of photographs left behind amongst the many boxes of material the folks at the Delaware Gazette had donated to the Historical Society back in October. One of the envelopes was of photos concerning the William Street Church Fire. That envelope contains  20 -25 photos and numerous negatives (which I have not counted). I've only gotten about two-thirds of the way through the prints.
However the first link above will give you an idea as to how big the fire was and its significance in (recent) Delaware history.

Either that or I can tell you about someone asking about Mary Katherine Campbell-Townley. She competed in the Miss America pageant three times, 1922-24. Won twice followed by finishing second. After that, one could not compete in multiple Miss America pageants.

Today's highway news

Didn't mean to skip out on this site for two weeks like that. My bad.
I was happilly surprised to see that someone(s) from Delaware decided to act upon their grand plan for part of their various bypasses around town. I didn't realize that as part of their southeast connection, between  US 23 south and US 36 east, their Glenn Parkway was going to be grade seperated with at least one crossing road (Berlin Station Rd), maybe more.
Anyways, someone in the Delaware city manager office decided to look over the maps for Delaware (with an eye towards the "new" Grady Hospital south of town) last week and noticed what was proposed for the new Glenn Parkway (which will, suposedly, eventully, lead north into the parking lot for the north Delaware Vocational School), crunched some numbers on cost, and asked 'why do this?'  Taking out a bridge over Berlin Station (and possibly the Railroad nearby) would save 10 million dollars. Money that would be spent instead on extend the roadway north to Berlin Station Rd (Glenn Parkway currently ends halfway between Cheshire and Berlin Station Rds) and south to Peachblow Road, near it's intersection with US 23 (south of the Grady (South) Hospital complex where the southern extent of Glenn Parkway is today).
I do look forward to the completion of the southern extension of Glenn Parkway from Grady Hospital South to Peachblow Road. That will assist in removing some traffic from US 23. However, without Glenn Parkway reaching it's logical conclusion, at US 36/Oh 37, east of Delaware, this road will not fullfill the needs of the area. Bridge or no bridge over Berlin Station Road.

Also, on a lighter note, this past Sunday's Columbus Dispatch had a collection of photos pertaining to funny signage, its readers had located.

Maybe if I pretend I'm living out 'Alice in Wonderland' it'll all make sense.

I'm late, I'm late, I'm late for an important date.
I should of had two more prior posts to this one today.
For the Weekend sports recast
We had the meltdowns, on Sunday, of both the Browns and Eagles in the NFL.
The ongoing circus that is Penn State, which has led to Ohio State to re-crank it's own circus (and both programs meet on the football field this coming Saturday, woo-hoo!)
Kudos to the state of Louisiana, both of your premier football teams took care of their business (LSU over Western Kentucky(?) and Saints over the Falcons)
And congrats to the Philadelphia Phillies for signing Jonathan Papelbon. Nice of you to jerk Scott Boras around along the way. It took Ryan Madson six years to finally handle the closer role. 10 mills a year for that? No thanks.

For Blue Monday it was a blue monday for me.
We had the passing, announced over the weekend, of Doyle Bramhill. Drummer, singer, producer, songwriter (most notabiliy with Stevie Ray Vaughn). Several musician friends of mine, from Texas, were real close to Doyle. They are hurting much worse, today than me.
I was fortunate enough to see Doyle Bramhill perform over in Lafayette, Louisiana a handful of years back. He was promoting a new album he had just released. C.C. Adcock (a guitarist from Louisiana I really like) was on the bill with Doyle (C.C. was also the producer of this new album by Doyle)

To top off my blues, I had received received word Monday evening that one of my professors, from my time at Louisiana State, had passed away. Dr. Miles Richardson taught Anthropology & Geography at Louisiana State from 1965 through 2009. The joke around the department was that Miles refused to retire and that he hoped to die while in his office, if not teaching. Alas, after several fainting spells in 2008 and 2009, that ideal wasn't going to happen. The university had gotten Miles to "semi-retire" and cutback to part time in 2008. My connection with Miles was that he was on my "committee" when I had to defend my thesis in the summer of '08. Miles was very enthousiastic about any academic persuit any student would discuss with him. Miles had the audacity to refer to me, while speaking to a visitor, as a "blues expert." A title that makes me cringe to this day, but something he believed that I had acheived (or would achieve). Thanks for everything Miles, for I am better for knowing you than I would be otherwise.

Week in Review

A busy, busy week for all of us, well some of us.
Down goes Senate Bill 5 here in Ohio
Delaware County can't tear down the old County Home (which is now owned by Buckeye Valley Schools) without a proper invatory done first.
The Columbus Blue Jackets really, really suck
The ghost of Gerald Ford is strong with this year's collection of republican presidental canidates.
The discovery that Men fuck boys in Centre County, Pennsylvania
(On a personal note) Good bye Dish Network, hello Direct TV

----
Worse idea this week - The mess at Penn St. university. From the coaches turning a blind eye to their friend's transgressions, the adminadstrators who feared standing up to Joe Pa, and the students who decided to riot because the only thing they know about Penn State University in Joe Paterno.

Best idea that really isn't all that great - Delaware County (Ohio) Commissioners having to hire a historic preservation specialist to examine the old County Home west of Kilbourne. Closed since 1996, sold to Buckeye Valley local school district in 2007, now they're getting around to looking at the home's historic value when a strong wind might blow it all down.

The Steve Mason award (for letting something pass) - Columbus Blues Alliance, for not being part of the Columbus Foundation's Big Give donation special yesterday and this morning.

Best thing that happened this week - Ohioans voting down Senate Bill 5 (aka issue 2). However ignored by those on the left was the passing of issue 3, precluding Ohioans from the National Health Care law. It passed by a higher percentage than Issue 2 went down, and had almost as many total votes counted as Issue 2.

Worst customer service award - Dish Network, for jerking my mom around for 5 months concerning the transfer of the "name" on the payment from my father to her. No more. We're now on Direct TV. Now if XM/Srius radio would hook up with Direct TV. I'm going to miss Bluesville.

Oh well, it's Friday!

Tuesday is supposed to be about maps, but I'm stretching here

The Columbus Dispatch wrote on Monday that accidents are up on I-71 SB, between the Fairgrounds (17th Ave exit) and I-670 since the orange barrels for the reconstruction started. And your point is....?
I should also motivate myself to write to Robert Vitale at the Dispatch and ask if ODOT really does expect folks to reach Mt. Vernon/Brozeville neighborhood by exiting at Broad Street and double back on Hamilton Ave.  All 10 of us. The impending removal of the exit ramp from I-71 SB to Leonard Ave/Ft. Hayes just bothers to me no end. Oh well, where was I 5 years ago when the planning for this project was occuring (oh yeah, in Baton Rouge).
----
I think I have the visual design I want for this blog now. The header photo (combination of a juke joint photo and of a map) is what I want. The background (out of the pre-selected choices Blogger/Google provided) will do for now, though I'm not crazy about it. Maybe I'll search out the HTML code and figure out some way to use some other photo/graphic I have and use that instead.
Bonus points for the first person to correctly identify the three US routes shown on the map I'm using for my header graphic.

Our Weekend Entertainment

Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young produced an album (years ago) entitled, 4-way street. That's sort of how I'm feeling this morning.  One way, Ohio State's football team won. Second way, Columbus Blue Jackets (hockey) not just lost, but were embarrased by the Philadelphia Flyers last night. Third way, Louisiana State's football team won. Fourth way, dread for the forthcoming Cleveland Browns football game this afternoon.
Such is life to be conflicted. A little bit happy, a little bit sad.
While I only listened to the Ohio State game, and only bits and pieces of it at that, the kids performance came off as inconsistant. A theme that has haunted this team all year. Yet somehow they still a puncher's chance at a Rose Bowl bid.
I did watch just about all of the LSU-Alabama game. Very tough game, the limitations of both offenses were shown by defenses that could shut down any of the winless pro teams out there this year. One could say LSU was lucky due to Alabama missing 4 field goals, but none of those were easy chances. All 4 of those misses (three were off the mark, one was blocked by LSU) were between 40 and 50 yards away. At the end, LSU's defense just did more than Alabama's defense. And for that, LSU has the inside track at reaching the (mythical) National Championship game for a third time in nine years (after making 3 in their previous 110 years).
Blue Jackets, what can you say. What was sold as an embarrasment of riches has turned into a pile of lead. I only watched the first period of their game (4-0 Flyers at that point) before LSU started. 9 goals?! That team quit last night. Now the death watch is on for the coach and GM, and what seemed like a good idea twelve years ago (constructing Nationwide Arena and getting a hockey team), now leaves you wondering if Columbus is to have their own white elephant. Who wants to pay to see that crap.
